I've lined up a fun new gig with the local Times Colonist newspaper, blogging about my run training from now until the newspaper's namesake 10k road race at the end of April. I'm super excited about this opportunity for two main reasons: First, it has a local flavour and impact. My previous sports writing has typically been for North American/international glossy publication where local impact is extant, but diffuse. This time around my readers - and co-bloggers, another fun first for me - will be right in my home town ... and alongside me on "my" home roads and trails. I'm really looking forward to making connections on this level, a process that I'm happy to report has already begun. The second main reason is where I'm presently at physically and the potential effect I see coming from blogging. In short, it's an incredibly constructive accountability mechanism. Things frankly aren't going very well for me health-wise at the moment, and having the knowledge that folks are tuning in to hear how I'm making out will amount to a great form of motivation. Assuming I get through these coming months successfully, I hope the process of sharing along the way will pay back that motivational "debt" accrued. Oh yeah, the photo! That's my better, Bruce Stotesbury, TC staff shooter, who was good enough to play along when I told him about my daily photoblog and my plan for today's entry. Cheers, Bruce, for being a good sport and to you and Darren for some chuckles and happy remembrances of our mutual buddy Gavin. It was pretty touching for me to see that photo of he and I still up on the newsroom wall. |
